728VT & Priest tools, your thoughts

I posted this on another thread, but maybe this is a better place:

"Not my experience at all. I bought this unit and installed it on my mill. A couple days later it was not working. I could hear the motor running, but the mill head was not moving. I emailed Greg to let him know. He told me to check that the gibs were loose enough and free to move. I told him it moved easily with the hand crank. I went back and forth with him for several emails, and finally convinced him that the something was wrong with the gearbox; something slipping inside.

I suggested I remove it and send it to him. I asked him about replacing it in the meantime so I could use the mill. He told me what a replacement motor/gearbox cost and then said "Can you help with the cost of the replacement?" I couldn't believe this.

I wrote back saying that he expected me to pay for a defective part after only a couple days use? I told him I was not impressed at all with his customer service.....or lack of it. Never heard back from him.

Since I had nothing to lose I took it apart and found what the issue was and fixed it. There was nothing keeping one of the gears from moving on the shaft and not lining up with the mating gear after a bit of use.

Now after a couple years it gave up again. So once again I took it apart and found that one of the plastic gears was stripped. And my mill head still works very smoothly up and down with minimal effort, so that was not a cause. I don't think plastic gears are a good idea.

So I'm looking around for a similar motor/gearbox that I can adapt to the mill to fix this. I won't contact Greg again or by anything else from him. Maybe others have had nothing but good service from him, but mine was unacceptable."

Also, since the spindle stop was mentioned, I bought it but didn't like the design at all. The release knob sticks down so far that it limits how close the spindle can come to the work. After a while I used some of the parts from his unit and redesigned it to basically be flipped 90 degrees so it doesn't stick down below the spindle.

Not impressed at all with his stuff.

Thanks for your post. I guess I gave the benefit of the doubt because the Priest accessories are listed on the PM website. In any case, I'll probably make something like Joe Higgins' spindle stop, which seems quite simple and effective.

I also went with Joe Higgins style spindle lock. It works extremely well. It does use enough of the spindle nose that an Indicol style indicator holder no longer fits.
