Savarin it could but I have no trouble anywhere else with them. I have to look back at some of the last ones and see what way they were taken.

I surface ground a small piece of alu just to see what it would do and was pleasantly surprised that it's pretty much exactly what steel looks like ground. I blocked the piece in with a couple parallels

Mark I had that same problem ONCE, I even tried rotating the pic on my end and uploading it upside down, it still showed on the forum upside down, I bawked and the mods fixed it lol

One more thing mark, Why are you weld etching? And what process are the etches from, tig mig? Is it just curiosity? I had to weld some 1/2 to 1/2 aluminum plate, with 210 amps tig....... not nearly enough sack to get that job done, so I borrowed some helium from air gas and did some penetration tests running in DC with pure helium, awesome penetration, full pedal was a little too much lol. Helium for those of you who don't know will make your tig welder super-powered instantly, it's better to run a 50 50 mix argon helium and use AC for the cleaning action, DC alu welds aren't pretty, also the helium will leave the bead kind of black, and must be brushed

A simple maifold made from commonly found brass fittings will give you a nice blend of gas. The quality of penetration and overall appearance is notable for sure.

How come all of a sudden when I post pics here they end up on there side?

Funny if I right click on your photo's and chose view image they are the correct orientation. This is with Firefox browser. Must be the forum software doing the change of orientation.
Nice torch holder!

Chevydyl,

Some are Tig most were flux core wire testing the limits of the new Lincoln power mig 210mp. Mostly curiosity.

Navel jelly was used for the etching. Good eye btw.

Quote: Got some shop time after Christmas clean up to FINALLY work on making a plate to mount a 6” 3-jaw chuck to my 9” rotary table. Used a piece of ¾” thick HRS for the base. The chuck has a D1-3 mount. Gotta love the web as a quick search showed the radius/diameter of the 3-hole pattern is 1.391”/2.782”.

Nice job on the mounting. I have that operation to do on a RT & chuck I picked up for the Bridgeport so appreciate your posting. I'm assuming the grinder still leaves a flat surface and all the high spots are the same height. Guess you could consider the finish pre-scraped in.:) Mike

Ripthorn, I suggest using a different alloy, probably 7050, or 7075, both are harder and stronger than 6061, plus I believe 7050 is the "bling" aluminum, it buffs to a very nice shine

Thanks for the advice. This is a prototype instrument, from the basic shape to many other aspects of design. The 6061 is what I had on hand, but if I make another one in the future, I may go 7075. I'm not wanting super shiny, though, that is too overdone in guitars in my opinion.

Saturday I assisted my son with the installation of the stereo system that my wife and I got him for Christmas. In between needing my assistance, I opted to make a couple of minor changes in the shop to allow better flow of work between pieces of equipment. Nothing too major but I wanted to get the shop situated the way I wanted it so I could launch into the new year ready to do actual work vs. moving things around.

I made another aluminum plate which I affixed to the lathe backsplash to hold a new exended tip live center and a bull-nosed live center that I recently purchased.

Moved my bench grinder back over in between my drill press and my disc/belt sander.

Vertical and horizontal bandsaw placed between man door and large rollup door. The Baileigh horizontal is on casters so when I need to cut long stock I can merely move it out away from the vertical saw.

I am a little tight between my lathe, drillpress, floor mounted bench grinder and my belt/disc sander but I am running out of options as I am pretty much busting at the seams in my shop.

This should still allow for easy access to each of the tools though.

Mike.

I am using Chrome and if I right click on the pic and select 'open in new window', it comes out correctly in the new window.
