2014 POTD Thread Archive

OK, I admit this is not a strictly machining project, but it does happen to be my project of the day. Actually, more like project of the past two months...

Plus what a better way to wish you all awesome Holidays?

I recorder the music on my little music setup, designed the microcontroller board at work, put it all together along with a couple of Sainsmart 8 SSR driver boards I bought on the web, and let the magic of Christmas take it over from there. Enjoy!

Nothing built today but I went to a vintage 2-wheel swap meet and got this HQ precision whip indicator for about 40 bucks. It is easy to read down to about half of a micrometer.

A friend came by later and dropped a lot of good to have-stuff like Thyrolit grinding stones, Sandvik cutters, Dormer thread tools and drill bits, and different type of welding pins. The bottle to the right is a cutting fluid.

I used scrap material including some railway track brackets I got from a local scrap metal dealer.
How easily did these machine? The finish in your pics looks pretty good. I have a couple in my scrap bin but I havent put them to use yet.

Cheers Phil

The steel machines like hot rolled, a little gummy, but the finish turned out ok.

Somewhere in this long topic someone made a couple short machinist jacks. I thought they looked cool so I printed-out the picture and took it down to the shop as a reminder. On a few occasions one would have come handy, so with the long holiday weekend I had some time to finally knock them out.

Fun little project. There's a lot of good ideas in this thread!

Could be called a project I guess? I needed a .375 inside radius end mill. I found a broken .750 and decided to re grind it. The "Home Grown cutter grinder" made short work of the task. After roughing it in it only took a few minutes to bring it in. Probably 30 minutes start to finish.

For the first time I needed a transfer punch and being Sunday all stores are closed so I had to make one.
I annealed an old elcheapo nail punch, turned it to size, re-hardened it and voila, it worked.

Seeing as how handy this was I think I should buy a set.
