2014 POTD Thread Archive

I am teaching myself to cut threads on the lathe. After several attempts I finally have a mating inside and outside thread pair. Made to 1-1/8 - 12
Hopefully a few more and I will have it repeatable.

Mans Toy Shop. Sunday hours 8-12. You just need to get out of bed earlier Charles ;)
For the first time I needed a transfer punch and being Sunday all stores are closed so I had to make one.
I annealed an old elcheapo nail punch, turned it to size, re-hardened it and voila, it worked.

But you saved yourself $20 in the process and had a good lie in. Hmmmm......

Cheers Phil

Man that's a great idea for the grinders. I only own one, well one bench grinder, it's an old Baldor I believe, the tags are painted or missing. Maybe a 2hp, it's a 10 inch. I also just picked up a Harig 612, currently working on building a demagnetizer using the transformer from an old century stick welder. I've never thought of owning more than one bench grinder, that's pretty neat. Mines setup with a 60 and a buffing wheel.

One of my brothers is visiting for the holiday, brought his Leatherman Surge (their largest model) with him & asked if I could do something with it. It has an option for quick release belt clip (& lanyard attachment which he does not use) that doesn't hold very securely. He's lost a few of the belt clips already. In fear of actually loosing the whole tool he asked if I can modify it to make it more secure

Here's what I came up with. Not a permanent attachment (which he did not care if it was) but it will require tools to remove if ever needed. The parts just laughed at my 1/16" cobalt drill bits, had to use solid carbide.

Drilled the clip & the end cap, pressed in a 1/16" pin. Slotted the clip with an 1/8" endmill for screw access. Clip should never fall off now

Xman charl, just a little criticism, your mig welds look a little cold, now I doubt they will ever break with the TV on there, I'm just saying maybe turn the heat up a little so your pushing the weld into the base metal. Is that a crank I see on there to raise and lower? That's pretty cool

nothing fancy like the stuff above, but I finished a tail stock drill chuck arbor that I've been meaning to make for a long time
