If I were going to buy one new 6" chuck for my 10" Logan, which should I buy? I currently have one worn 3 jaw and one worn 4 jaw. Both have seen better days. Parameters are:

Will work for 90% of what I do. In order: Learning to turn, building tooling for my lathe and mill, eventually build model engines.

Cost is a factor. If I am going to spend money it needs to be reasonable and efficient. Get the most bang for the least amount of money.

I was thinking either a 4 jaw or a set true 3 jaw. But I want some opinions.

If I was in your position, I would look to Shars.

Logan is a quality lathe, I would reward it (and yourself) with a quality chuck like a Pratt-Burnerd
Shars is a gamble
I got a 4" Shars for my 6" Atlas, one set of jaws were not ground right on the steps- I went back and forth with them to get a proper set

What spindle is on the Logan ?

I am well pleased with the 6" Sanou I got for my SB Heavy 10. I did have to lap the jaws to make them slide more freely.

1 1/2" x 8 tpi. It is a Logan 820.

It really shouldn't make much difference how much the 4 jaw is worn if all the jaws will close properly. I have an old 8" LW 4 jaw that's so worn it sounds like a couple pair of castanets if the spindle is running without anything in it. That being said I can still dial a part in to less than .0005" without any trouble. If it's just a matter of the jaws being worn or bell shaped they can be ground and regrooved.

Pratt-Burnerd, nice chucks. It's only (your) money.
I've got a "Set-Tru" type collet chuck that I've dialed in quite accurately. Like it a lot.
I don't think "Set-Tru" is of any value on an independent jaw chuck and maybe only valuable on a very high quality scroll chuck.
Scroll chucks by their nature have some variability and may not center the same at all diameters. Too many moving parts.

I bought a "SouthBend" 8" 3 jaw from Grizzle. Machined a cast iron back plate to a very snug fit. Run out is worse than the 3 jaw that came with my PM lathe. Doesn't matter unless I'm reversing the work in the chuck, then I switch to a 4 jaw independent.

If you can get a 6" lathe chuck with soft jaws, that is the way to go. Although you may spend more than you want eventually getting sets of blank soft jaws to bore for your special jobs.

Edit: correct typo
