3 jaw chuck jaws

Damn, those are some really decent priced chucks at CDCO. What’s going to be the difference between the standard 3 jaw and the reversible 3 jaw? Is the reversible a better chuck than the standard 3 jaw? Just saw it was a little more expensive

Basically yes.

You don't need to completely unwind the jaws and reset them, and you don't need to store the opposite set of what your using.

Just pop these off and turn them around.

Definitely get the reversible. Along with no possiblity of losing one set of jaws, you can make soft jaws, pie jaws etc. that bolt on. I wouldn't consider a chuck without bolt-on jaws, but that's just me.

i'd be worried to buy a cheap chuck unless the lathe is also fairly crappy. A poorly machined chuck is best when the operator is terminal and wants time to pass slowly. I'd look for a good condition Bison, Buck, P and B, Gator, etc or if new a PM or similar. If the jaws look beat up, avoid. A good quality chuck with worn jaws is no fun either. I'm a used guy but will only buy new or almost new quality chucks.

Two piece jaws are much more versatile for the reasons already mentioned. ASME B5.60-2014 is the current American standard that controls the interface of two-piece chuck jaws, among other things. There are many sources of soft jaws and pie jaws (to machine for special needs where standard jaws won't do). I recommend you verify that any two-piece jawed chuck you buy conforms to that standard. They all should, but buyer beware.

Regarding CDCO, I've not bought from them before, however at those prices, I doubt they are top of the line chucks. There are many factors to quality. It's your budget, your tools, your choice.

Send me the dimensions of the jaws you have - no. of teeth per inch, width of jaw, height of slot - I might have a set of outside jaws that’ll fit. Came with a tool box from an import 12x36 lathe (lathe got sold long before) so the odds are decent
