What Did You Buy Today?

Sorta, kinda like machining related, precision machine. Finally broke down and purchased a Giraud Power Trimmer for my competition rifle case prep. This is the end all three way case trimmer. It cuts the case to length, chamfers the OD and deburs the ID all in one step to within 0.0005" tolerance (assuming you do all the preparation, it measures off the shoulder so sizing required before trimming).

I have been wanting one of these for years. Expensive but well worth the cost. This one came available from one of my club members that actually has one for each caliber he shoots so he doesn't have to change the case holders or adjust the blade. Common practice for those who can afford it. He had decided he wasn't going to shoot this caliber any more and made me a heck of a deal. Very grateful. Ordered the case holder for my caliber today, along with a blank to have reamed with the same reamer my new barrel was chambered with.

I haven't purchased much lately, other than a few specialized indexable lathe tools, not exciting, so wanted to share this.

I have 3 of those long 1/4" extensions, 18", 24, and 36". Don't use them often, but on occasion they have come in very handy. Mike

"I don't think I've even seen such a long 1/4" extension like this one before."

I don't usually buy things in anger. But for about the 25th time this year, I pulled my cheap chinese *splat* 12" calipers out, and they had eaten yet another battery. I decided long ago not to buy anything but good quality measurement tools. This chinese caliper is from before I learned that lesson.

This one is coming.

It is NOT a Chinese knockoff. It is genuine Mitutoyo. It will need a battery every 5 or 10 years, NOT every single week!

I might glue one of these to the back of the chinese caliper and relegate it to the garage...
...where hopefully I'll forget about it laying on the floor and drive a bulldozer or something suitable over it.
Or I might just exercise one of the anvils, and smash it with a hammer. Smashing with a hammer would be good therapy! :)

I bought it for those unknown times in the future. Was cheap enough.

Estate sale this morning $10.

My tool box runneth over :p

Those metallic General hobby knives are super nice! The red plastic one is so-so. I have the exact same set in my shop.

I have a couple of 6" Mitutoyo's at home, that I love. At work, a similar, but larger 12" is my daily driver, and it's even better. More rigid. Comes back to zero perfectly, with every close. The extra mass pays benefits! You made a good decision.

Oh, and my old Harbor Freight, Mitutoyo clones, ate batteries like no tomorrow. I threw them in the trash can.

Glad to hear the 12" are so nice!

I should qualify, I do understand that not everyone can afford high end tools. And the newer Chinese tools are getting better. There were no high quality import calipers when I bought these, and a comparable mitutoyo then was twice the price of what I paid now. These imports were 1/10th the price of a mitutoyo back then.

The whole market has changed, and those who can't afford high dollar tools are probably way better off than I was years ago. For anyone getting into machining, dollars spent on quality measurement tools are NOT wasted. Cheap out elsewhere, but buy the best measurement tools you can afford.

Actually the Igaging (available 10 years ago) were far superior to almost every other Chinese caliper. Long battery life and accurate, as well as absolute. I still don't own a Mit caliper, Mics yes, but caliper no.
