Anyone make a spider for their 1220?

Theres not a lot of threads on the spindle shaft , I was thinking of welding a tube to the spanner nut ?

That’s an idea that didn’t come up on my thread(same question) for my older machine. Might be an easier solution overall, as opposed to making a new nut to install and remove as needed. Of course, I hope you weld better that I do.

My welding tends to be ugly but nothing has failed .

My other thought was internal spanner slots to fit over the nut and set screw it on.
Or even just set screws into the spanner slots on the nut?
That way I can return to original easily . I still need to get the mill up to snuff before I do anything

How many threads are on the back of the spindle? You really only need about four threads. My 10x22 has two nuts on the spindle. I removed one of them and screwed on my spider in its place. The nut is about 4 or 5 threads thick. The spindle is unaltered.

Well, I've done a few other things to my lathe, but I haven't touched the spindle at all. (Improved compound clamp, set true back plate, DRO and home made ELS.)

Maybe 2 protruding from the nut.

Only 1 nut? Mine had two. One "does the work" the other serves as a jam nut. Both are about 6mm thick, four threads each with maybe two threads protruding from the nut.

When I first got my 10 x22 lathe, one of the first mods was to thread the back of my spindle bore for 1-1/8 - 16 tpi for a spindle stop.

It would be fairly easy to make a spider utilizing the 1-1/8 - 16 tpi threads that would accommodate stock up to 7/8" in diameter. This would leave me with a .090 wall thickness in the threaded region which would be sufficiently thick enough for a spider.
