Finding Gears For Lathes

mac1911

Hi, If your lathe does not have a gearbox you do not need to find your specific lathe when using "Choose Lathe" in RideTheGeaRTrain. Instead you choose either "imperial Lathe without a gearbox" or "Metric lathe without a gearbox". Actually with a 10 TPI leadscrew it is an Imperial (inch) lathe. These are the first two items on the list.

Since your 10 TPI leadscrew is uncommon you will need to adjust that in step 2A when it asks for your set of change gears. On the same page is an option to change the pitch of the leadscrew. Just enter 10 in that box instead of the more common 8TPI.

The reason certain brands of lathes are mentioned further down the list is that they have a Quick Change gearbox to drive the leadscrew. In those lathes the program needs to know the gear ratios provided by the gearbox, and unfortunately there is no standard and there are many variations of gearbox designs. The gearbox gear ratios have to be entered. The custom gearbox feature in the program allows users to work out the ratios from the thread cutting table attached to the computer. I get involved with helping with this process and adding the data to the program. Since you do not have a gearbox you don't have to worry about any of this!
