Set screws

Probably best to use loctite rather than reefing down hard on a set screw, should only need to hold something else in place like a key. Also, old timers would often use two with the top one fixing the first in place.

Folks may scoff but here's one, buy the smaller ones from McMaster or the local hardware to fill out your set.

Thanks folks lots of good ideas. I think I'll check out the hardware store next time I'm in helena or missoula and buy what I can then just start working around different places to fill in the gaps, again thanks for helping me out.

I totally agree with your point about using loctite rather than over-tightening a set. It's a great way to ensure that the propeller stays in place without damaging the surrounding material. And I love the tip about using two. Also, thanks for the suggestion to buy smaller their from McMaster or the local hardware store to fill out our sets.

The small ones are for a different industry than larger ones.

So a farm or industrial supply may have different larger sets, the smaller ones likely not.

One could determine what type of industry uses the small ones then look there.

Motorola at one time had such a set for the assorted knobs used on portable radios.

Still have that set.

In Fresno Ca is a place that sells to places like Home Depot, they are a screw distributor.

Open to public, they have minimum order of $5.00, sometimes by line, other by order.

Prices good.

Last purchase was 1/4 28 setscrews, 3/4 inch long that we used to make the insert holders.

Bought 10, was 5 bucks, so less than 0.50 each as that was minimum order, another place wanted 7 bucks each for something similar.

Mid valley distributors.

Do not cal for this type of order as they are usually very busy.

Make a list of all sizes needed, be descriptive as needed, size needs to include length and material.

Send it both as a spreadsheet and pasted in body of email.

Locate their web page to get their email.

In your request for quote ask about minimum order if per line or total.

You may need to get $5.00 of each size, but that may be several hundred.

Quality is good.

When buying screws, watch out for Chinese room-softened butter. The word for butter is written on the box. In Chinese, the word is 黄油. When they spell it in English, it is written as "Hillman Group".

Bolt Depot No minimum order, reasonable shipping and you can buy just one piece if you want.

Buy a selection and add to it as needed. They also sell empty boxes & racks so you can create your own assortment. Here's mine:

The little boxes keep track of the different lengths of tiny set screws; I mix lengths of the larger diameter set screws.

The Bolt Depot racks are a perfect fit for Plano 3600 & similar-size Flambeau boxes:

Harbor Freight used to sell assortments of set screws. Looks like they still do.
I won't vouch for quality.
