I drove out of California in 1997, driving my 81 stepside that I'd kept in smog passing condition since I got my license. I have lived in different places since, and have not been subjected to the cruelty of passing the same emissions requirements as current model ever since. @matthewsx, Reno is Washoe County, the second most populous in the state. They get their smog fees, no opportunity to tax left behind in the big city. You'll have to go to Carson City to evade smog... Ask me how I know...
