Selling a used car in Ca.

It's the seller's responsibility in California. Car must be smogged within 90 days prior to sale. You may get someone to take it without, but if it doesn't pass there may be problems. The whole premise is that you are selling a car that can be registered and driven. If it won't smog, it can't be registered and driven.

"The seller is responsible for smog inspection
Section 24007 (b)(2) of the California Vehicle Code states it’s the responsibility of the seller to provide a valid smog certificate before or during the sale of a vehicle. If the vehicle is already in your possession, and the private car seller didn’t give you proof of passing the smog check test, try finding an amicable solution for you both. If that doesn’t work out, you may have to take legal action since the California DMV won’t get involved."

I’ve got an 88 C4 vert myself. C4’s are kind of at the bottom of their worth/value right now and prices are just starting to climb.

Great perfomance per buck value, but not something considered overly “desire-able“ yet.

Your 94 would go for around 11-13 grand here. People are asking stupid amounts for them, but they only sell around that range, sometimes less. Condition is paramount to get a good selling price on these “want” cars.

I bought my 88 two years ago for a little under 9 grand:

Had a few issues I could easily fix (broken plastics, wonky headlights, roached master cylinder, etc), so we got it a fair bit cheaper than the asking.

Would likely sell around 10-11 now, assuming you can find someone willing to part with the cash for a two seat sports car.

Thankfully, we don’t deal with smog certs here…

How much is the smog test? Did you have trouble last time?

I have a Michigan car which won’t pass due to unapproved cats. It’s registered there until 2025 and probably it’ll be done by then. If it needs to be sold before it’ll go to northern Nevada.

If your car is in good condition it might be worth a few hundred to get a smog certificate. Probably many buyers don’t want to take a chance so that might end up being a selling advantage.

Otherwise, put a cage in it or drive it up to Reno.

A amicable solution would be , IMO be the agreement between the seller and buyer that the buyer gets the smog cert .
I don't understand Ca.'s BS about getting in between seller and buyer . The car won't get current reg . without a smog cert . anyway . So what is the point ?

Over the years we would pay around 6-8 hundred . I was to lazy (not on top of things) to realize we needed a new mechanic / smog tester .

Pep boys is flat rate for smog, does not matter year or type, one price.

Not all d smog and not all have the dyno, but price is right.

Price depends on whether it's plug-and-pay or they have to sniff the tailpipe. I think my last sniff was like $75.

I was astounded when I found out that the state trusted the onboard computer on newer cars to report smog status. Seemed to me an invitation to cheat the system. Apparently VW thought the same.

Even with all the regs, checks and safe-guards, it's helpful to have a good relationship with your smog man. A few years back I took my '88 CRX in. It failed on pretest, needed a new cat. My smog man had one of the same year, offered to pull his in and substitute it for mine.

Back in the 80's I had a Ford Ranchero and they did a smog test with no Dyno . Back then they just free ran it (at a much higher RPM than you would normally drive) the car never ran right after that . I think it bent a valve stem .
