POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Daft question: can a 1/2" spacer be added between the chuck halves to get the extra amount required for 5C once the nose taper is re-ground??

Like I said, daft question, but assuming it can be split, that raised the question in my mind whether that was a potential option.

Perhaps an adapter collar to take up the 1/2" and a 1J angle on the outside to fit the chuck and a 5C angle on the inside to hold the collets.
No need to modify either one. IF you can make it work.
My thought about modifying the collets was that 5C are much more readily available and "converting" some to 1J would preserve the chuck and only risk the loss of a single collet.

If he was acting in good faith, he should have said something along the lines of “appears to be a 5C chuck” and not note that he also had 5C collets. Since you cleaned it up for him, he should accept the return (and IMO pay for return shipping, but I wouldn’t push it - you can probably ship it back for less than the $20 if you check around).

Assuming you didn’t use the “friends & family” payment on PayPal they should honor a refund with you returning the chuck.
He clearly stated 5C collets would fit since he was offering to sell those as well. That said, I was on ebay earlier today and countless D1-5 ads actually had D1-4 backing plates. I don't know, people going to auctions and re-selling stuff they have no clue about.

Finally got some slow time at work to finish a cart I started 8 months ago. A far amount of machining to make it look pretty. One side can raise and lower with a handled nut, so I can level long parts into the saw for cutting square. I have to load up to 24 foot long bars and roll to the saw from the storage area occasionally. This should help without having to rearrange stuff to get to overhead crane all the time.

I needed to shorten the cap screw holding the center rod from turning, and been wanting to make a tool to hold various size screws to grind the ends easily. So took the time to make this screw holding jig. It worked great. Then found a spot to hang it up, so I remember I made it next time I need to use it.

Finally got my shaper stand finished, just need to by some locks to fill the holes. Now I can finally use it. Except I applied for a transfer to a new city and got the position. So might be packing up the whole shop.
