POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Hauled a load of scrap this morning. Then set in on cleaning a set of verniers from the auction last week. Didn't get a good before pic of the 12in, but about the same condition as the 24. Pretty happy with the results so far.20240528_152502.jpg20240528_152825.jpg20240528_172203.jpg

Got the Y axis power feed finished up, and the limit switch/stops, and tracks installed for Y & Z. Lots of hand drilling and tapping into the mill. The limit stops that came with the power feeds all required some milling as they were not parallel to the tracks when installed. Having purchased the cheaper X axis PF it required a shaft extension, threaded male one end female the other, and drilled for a retention pin, and needed to relocate the mounting holes on the PF body to get it in the position that I wanted. Also needed to make several different spacers internal and external. Added four 120V outlets for the three power feeds, and DRO, and the soon to come lighting and coolant pump. Stripped the access cover on the front of the knee and sanded/polished it up, and stuck an old PAW sticker on it for a little bling. Have started on way covers using material from a parted out tread mill, and need to finish up the VFD install and remote switching. Also will be needing make up a power draw bar setup as this machine is quite a bit taller than my BP, and I just keep getting shorter. Cheers, Mike

Started moving things around... to start organizing where stuff goes and get the space to continue to empty the PODS...

Pushed one of the car projects out:

Felt guilty of neglecting it and gave it a quick wash...

Swapped the two dollies with the four I bought yesterday from HF... and moved the second project car. Also moved the Wells-Index milling machine while I was at it.

I welcome comments on location of the milling machine. I can't place it in the corner because the water filter is there. Can't place it next to the lathe because the Tesla batteries are there... I can swap location with the lathe... or move it along the line where is at...

I want to build a wall/barrier between the double garage side and where the machines are. To avoid the chips going over to the other side. For the first time in 30 years being married, my wife will be able to park her car inside the garage. Do not want to have chips all over the other side.

Also, now that I finally cleared the area under it, I will install the lift for the 1:32 scale car track table!

EDIT: Another machine out of the PODS

I pulled out all the stuff in the corner. Then I wired in a new 4 plug outlet and breaker.

Then I wedged in the back bench and slid the L into position. Trying to figure out the grinder and cutter layout now.

Cutting oil is my blood.

Shop layout is kind of personal. I'd want some sort of table/workbench in the immediate area of the lathe and mills, even if it wasn't my main bench. Just like having someplace to set stuff close at hand while working on those machines.

If you're going for wall/barrier, I'd think about something that could be moved/removed relatively easily. Could be a lifesaver on 'new machine day'.

I was messing around with a digital “microscope” today. It seems to have two ranges where it’s focused on each object. First up is two identical Nicholson files except one is slightly used and the other is as sharp as a marble.IMG_6951.jpegIMG_6952.jpegIMG_6953.jpegIMG_6954.jpeg
It gets great quality photos at the two ranges. I then tested it on a penny.IMG_6957.jpegIMG_6956.jpeg
It’s hand held and moves a lot when you focus it. 30fps is a bit slow to focus it quickly but the results are great.IMG_6955.jpeg
