POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Not much time this weekend.
Did manage to pull the bushings out of one of the quadrant gears. These will be an easy off the shelf replacement.
Shaft is uniform in size so good to go.

Started to put the apron back together.

Required a couple of attempts to get the correct sequence of assembly and orient the half nuts (thankful that I have lots of pictures) but not too bad.

Well I went down the rabbit hole today. I was doing a simple drill and tap job in the mill. Crank down the rpm's to 85 (lowest setting it will go down to). It was a little struggle to get it down that low. Variable speed pulley was not moving smoothly the last crank or two. Got the hole tapped and went to increase the rpm's back to around 500. Handle did not want to budge. Applied a little more gronk and pop something gave up. Well crap. Take the front face plate off of the mill and look around. One of the ears on the collar that the adjusting arms attach to broke. Wonderful. I could weld it up without removing it, but the belt is looking rough so since I am in here lets go ahead and change it. Get the motor removed and the top cover off. I then see the rust on the shaft that caused all my problems.

Let me remove the top pulley so I can get the shaft cleaned up. Well the top support bearing of course wants to fight me. I had to get creative with pulling it off.

rb3.jpgI get the bearing pulled off with no dramas, but I discovered it is shot and will need replacing. Of course, there is no number on the bearing so I can easily order another one. I got on the phone with H&W machine repair and they had what I needed and will be shipping me a belt and bearing. So here my mill sits.

The new ISP is plowing fiber into the property, very possibly this or next week. Passing drawings into them, basically working to give them clear instructions on where to run fiber, and what I'll take care of in the building(s). They're actually very flexible, assuming you get past the first levels of gate keepers who answer the phones. Once you get an email for their network engineers, it seems smooth sailing (once they realize that they're dealing with someone who speaks their language and is trying to make life easier for them).

I just hope they're slow enough to let me recover fully before they need my part of the install done!

Yep most likely. I have not used the mill in it's slowest speed since the fire. So I imagine that is where it came from.
That's a bummer. Hopefully there aren't soo many more of those to find!
 
The oil fired heater in the rancher would not fire up . Pulled the entire unit out and checked everything and all looked good . Called in the pros . After the fact , found that the vent pipe was rusted thru with a 1" hole at ground level . Pros showed up today after having to replace a totally dead battery in the CRV . Drained 23 gallons of water out of the oil tank and finally got red oil . Hate to see this bill but it's down the rental which is a write off . Have to replace the pipe tomorrow . Normal day . My wood splitting was postponed for the day . :(
 
Made a hex spanner wrench. This time (3rd time is the charm?) I used weep holes in the side to let the air out, and I bought a quality OSG drill bit which was true to size. Pins have 0.001" interference, as that was the closest I could get without spending a lot of money. Made a spacer to hold the pins and to limit the pin depth. Made entirely from 12L14, including the metric undersized M2x8 dowel pins. Diameter of body is 3/4", rod diameter is 1/4". Body length around 1.25", rod length a hair under 4". After the third time, it's getting easier...

H-W might have those OEM type decals covering the first two rules of Reeves drive. I was going to tease you a little, but then you reminded me that you had a fire, and that burst my smartass bubble. I did not enjoy my fire, and I still get irritated with that "special rust" on my tools. Anyway, the vario head usually has a label as such, to prevent said issue:

VARIABLE SPEED HEAD - SPEED CHANGE
a) Change your speed only when spindle rotates
b) It is a must to run your speed from the low speed of 75 UP to 4000 rpm twice a day to prevent pulley freeze.
