POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Well I went down the rabbit hole today. I was doing a simple drill and tap job in the mill. Crank down the rpm's to 85 (lowest setting it will go down to). It was a little struggle to get it down that low. Variable speed pulley was not moving smoothly the last crank or two. Got the hole tapped and went to increase the rpm's back to around 500. Handle did not want to budge. Applied a little more gronk and pop something gave up. Well crap. Take the front face plate off of the mill and look around. One of the ears on the collar that the adjusting arms attach to broke. Wonderful. I could weld it up without removing it, but the belt is looking rough so since I am in here lets go ahead and change it. Get the motor removed and the top cover off. I then see the rust on the shaft that caused all my problems.

Let me remove the top pulley so I can get the shaft cleaned up. Well the top support bearing of course wants to fight me. I had to get creative with pulling it off.

View attachment 462951I get the bearing pulled off with no dramas, but I discovered it is shot and will need replacing. Of course, there is no number on the bearing so I can easily order another one. I got on the phone with H&W machine repair and they had what I needed and will be shipping me a belt and bearing. So here my mill sits.

when you put it back together, (after polishing the shaft) use teflon on the shaft. I had a reeves fail because it was sticking on the shaft, polished it and it was still tight, put teflon on and smooth as silk. Still is years later. Wood lathe

Today, I tried some strange brew in the shop. It started with me getting a new PC mouse, because they do crap out. The new one came in a bag that felt like, to the best of my ability to describe, woven Tyvek fleece. I thunk, hey, this looks like a filter bag. So I heaped a few spoonfuls of perlite absorbent in, and tied it around the pump spout in my parts washer, stirred the pot to suspend the crud, and let it go for an hour. When I checked back, I saw the solvent was running clear, and you can see where the stitching was in the bag from the little laminar wisps of dark solvent on the ledge surface. Interesting! My pump is too puny to do much this way, but I reckon a more powerful pump and a plumbed bypass would help me stretch some life out of my solvent, which is getting obscene in cost. I need to wait until the filter bag dries out to determine if the perlite picked up any oil, but the dark spots in the bag make me think that's promising.

Shop kitty is not impressed with this sort of thing. She wants me to do a better job of vacuuming up the chips and give her more attention.

Been there done that, still got the receipt, on the exact same mill. I did not have to replace the bearing though. Please let me know if you feel a marked improvement with the new bearing. All I need is an excuse.

Well that changed quickly. Put a ad up for the bronco last weekend, deposit from out of state buyer with in 24 hrs. Left yesterday. Having sellers remorse.

Luckily it went to a good home. Already got a picture today from a happy new owner.

Under 24 hours? No surprise, with a 66-67 I would expect you'd have cash in hand in under 24 minutes. Except the side mirrors look like GM...

Next morning actually. I live in Montana and expected a out of state buyer. They couldn't get me money fast enough. Bigger market areas might have been minutes. Had a couple back up buyers as well.

Early September 66 U13. They got the inserts and bulkhead along with a few extras. Top and doors are off it now, that was the picture they sent today. They plan on keeping everything uncut.

Side mirror was a joke, don't know who put it on but I take the blame for leaving it.

Getting up on my soap box now: The new "Bronco" is a sad joke...
I'm sure the old guys who first looked at the fox body mustang thought the same thing. Now they have a following.

I'm grumbling about the new mustang GT, because it doesn't look like as nice as the ones from 10 years ago...

I do like the looks of the new full size broncos, tho. And there's some pretty nice options available. Price keeps me from more than window shopping, tho.

Things change. Not much we can do about it, except snag what we like when it's available.
