POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Made bases for the saw and small vise out of some scrap 3/4 plywood.

Cleared off some bench space

Only to occupy it again a short time later.

My solution for the Clausing worm bushing replacement

Never ran a lathe or turned a part in my life so am mocking up the bushing in aluminum first. This one will get bored on the lathe

And a second one gets bored on the mill. My milling skills are on par with my lathe skills as in having zero.
Took me two hours to get the part centered :D

Helped a local stock car dirt track guy today. I straightened his front axle after a hit and down in the rhubarb. Was bent about 3/4”-1”. Moly steel. Hard as heck to straighten. my hydraulic press wouldn’t touch it.
I used my dozer pin press I made a few years ago and a 75 ton cylinder
with some V blocks
cheers

Thanks! My vise has a 1/4” cold rolled dynamic jaw retainer with alloy cap screws. If I could find a milling vise that fit this tiny table, I’d buy it. But even the 4” milling vise is much too long in my opinion. I’m either fowling the vertical dovetails, or fowling my knuckles with it.

Harold Hall has a set of instructions for modifying these drill press vises for milling. I’ve found it suitable (so far).

I can’t believe Delta Rockwell didn’t offer a vise for it. I hope to find a small shaper vise to use. But those are hard to find without a small shaper attached. Ha!

I have a 3" Kurt-Style vise on my Mini-Mill:

Looks like it would have similar clearance to your hand wheel:

It's the same as the Little Machine Shop 3" HD Vise:

They have a slightly smaller version that has similar specs:

It looks like your table is 6.5" wide, mine is only 6"
I wonder if you feel that cramped on the handwheel have you thought about a 1" block of steel as a riser for the vise? Not a swivel base, but a chunk that fits the width of the table and has the same notches that you would use for the normal vise hold down. 1" should give you ample clearance to feel comfortable. My 5" bridgeport vise fits on a 6" wide table on my Clausing .. it overhangs on both sides. I don't have a problem with it, but I can see you feel cramped, and there are ways around it. Can you afford 1" in height?

I’ll have to think about that! Thanks ChazzC!

Today I worked on a handwheel. I still have to make a dial.

My fancy method of keyway cutting was just an appropriate size piece of hss in a boring bar mounted in the tailstock. Then lots of pushing and pulling, until it was deep enough. Truth be told, I went a little too deep.

Yes, I could raise it an inch. I bang my knuckles looking for this table lock under the overhanging vise. I don’t think raising the vise will give me any better view of that little booger.
Don’t worry Woodchucker! I’m not gonna blame you if someday this doesn’t go my way. I’m not using this vise because I don’t have options. I’m using it because it’s the option I prefer, using my own experience as a guide.
If it helps to ease your nerves, I’ll put the big vise in pictures from now on. Lol

I use a 4" on my Rockwell. The big trick is to saw off the back coolant trough! And DON'T bolt it to the center slot.

Apologies about the organic lamellar composite material I'm cutting

It's easier to cut the rabetts with the mill than a router!
