POTD- PROJECT OF THE DAY: What Did You Make In Your Shop Today?

Today's job is to pack up things and get them out finally . I'm falling behind on this as the weather has been nice outside . :)
 
Saved a screw up - tap spun in the last hole in a cast iron back plate, so I drilled and tapped it to the next size up and loctited an old 1/2-13 bolt in the hole

Cut it off with a hack saw and faced it again in the lathe

Drilled and tapped for 3/8-16 (was holding my breath that it didn't break through!)

Thanks, i was very relieved. Funny that it was the first time I've needed a helicoil and I didn't have that size :)
 
I guess I didn't catch that the shaft didn't wear round. One would assume that might have been the case.
If the shaft has centers, turn/grind round and make a new bushing for the new size?

Of course, that's harder to do when you are rebuilding your lathe... ;)
No working lathe is one of the challenges. That and no actual experience running a lathe:D
Good news is Clausing has the worm gear and worm bearing, checking on availability of the bushing. I find it astounding that any parts are still available for a 55 YO machine.
Not inexpensive worm gear is $104, bearing is $11 would guess the bushing will be $40 plus if available.
Sort of back on track again until I'm not. Was thinking I should part the thing out and move on but hey will just toss more money at It. Like owning boat I guess :fat:

Alright, finally finished my dividing head adventure. Got this a couple of summers ago for a really good price. Came with all the plates, a thread protector and a single back plate.

Great forward to now and I have a collection of chucks and a face plate I can use with it.

First, stripped out down and cleaned it and the tail stock. Very little wear, lots of crusty greaseIMG20230608183749.jpg

Then set about making a couple of back plates and modifying the one I have

That was for my 4" three jaw, next up was for a really nice face plate I picked up  years ago to make my own rotary table :)

Turned drilled and threaded (used the dividing head as a go gage!)

Then turned a spindle nose copy and left it there - in theory that should stay perfectly true for each of the back plates

Then set up the dividing head to use like a spin indexer

Here's the 4 jaw back plate after, ahem, a slight accident and a hail Mary

Then mounted up the 4 jaw and used it to hold the face plate so I could open up the counter bores a smidge

After that it was the face plate back plate (!)

And the 3 jaw. No pics of that as I screwed up one of the counter bores and it looks kinda ugly
