Need some creative ideas for a gate latch

A lot depends on if you are after a bit of security to keep something in or out, or just something to hold the gate shut
No security required, We just need to keep the dogs from opening the gate.

I am making a lot of work for myself though. With the cutting and welded insets and all.
It does satisfy simple and elegant.

I’m stepping away for 17 days of blissful vacationing in England. Maybe clarity of thought will be attained.
My aching back may be renewed as well.

I like the idea of a spring-mounted pawl at the top. Just a simple press down on the back side of the fulcrum will release the latch. Maybe that is what you drew up above, Jeff?
I also have a suggestion to go along with your latch... I have a barn door on our pantry in the kitchen and don't like the idea of barn doors slamming open or closed, so I purchased a soft close mechanism for it. I love how it slows the door down and both ends of travel. The mechanism is made for indoors, but a simple shield to protect it from the elements might be an option.

”Just a simple press down on the back side of the fulcrum”, you said it better than I did.
I like it but it may be more work than I’m willing to put into the project.
Simple is more urgent than elegant at this point.

Here is the one I was thinking of earlier, and I couldn't find the photo.
I've never made one, this a stolen photo I saved from somewhere.
But it appears like it would work well, self-latching and would probably tolerate some gate sag without needing adjustment.
It could be dolled up to make it fancier if need or made quick dirty and utilitarian too.

Edit: I forgot you have a rolling gate, this could be adapted but it might not be ideal though.

I had a guy make me a custom garden gate. He's a machinist, welder and artist. The latch he made was beautifully simple, lets the gate swing in and out, looks good and is really easy to operate. He turned a nice handle that works from either side, attached it to a piece of spring steel, and made a simple latch, just a cutout. It's tapered so closing the gate lets the spring click into place, very satisfying.

Sorry for really crummy pictures.

I’m back on the gate latch.
The customer is very happy. This gate is made like Fort Knox. It’s rock solid. It rolls beautifully!

Those of you who contributed ideas, thank you.
Right or wrong, this is where I am, see pics.
I need to add a latch.

Now that it’s built, I’m done and ready to move on except I need a latch.
What do you think?
