I’m creatively challenged.
When we get back from England I will add the rolling gate.
I want to add an elegant yet simple latch.
The gate will match the frames, it will be on V roller bearings.
I’ll have upper roller supports with a stop on both sides.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It would seem a standard gate latch would work, but mounting it 90º. You could also copy the design to make it fancier.

I like the simplicity and I like the idea of adapting the concept to my own original design.
And, you are correct, it would have to be mounted 90 degrees which would cause problems as the posts are 2x2”. Maybe not??

Visit an old-school hardware store where they have smart folks.

They have huge catalogs of specialty hardware.

They may have something already.

However, let me think out loud.

A pivoting prong that sticks out of the front of the rolling gate.

A spring pulls it down.

Some sort of creative button or handle lifts it.

Front has a taper like a door bolt.

It also can have taper on the sides as well.

It also has a notch on the bottom.

The opposite side has a front plate with a hole for the prong with an edge that fits the notch.

When the gate is closed, the slightly pointed prong goes into the hole in the plate, the taper lifts it up and over the plate, and then the plate fits into the notch, securing the gate.

When close, nothing sticks out.

A vertical bar coukd be on the back of the above prong that can be used as a handle to open the gate, pull on the handle, and prong rocks upward, releasing the gate.

I’ll have to read this ten more times to picture it. I’m just not creative at all.
I was awake at 2:00 this morning as usual, I was thinking of a tapered end on a pivoting bar that would rise up then drop into a notch to lock. Gravity woukd make it work.
To open just depress the opposite end. It’s hard to explain isn’t it.

A lot depends on if you are after a bit of security to keep something in or out, or just something to hold the gate shut
