I am interested in having metal gib strips made for my Atlas Clausing 10100 six inch lathe. I purchased replacement gib strips from Clausing but like the original gib strips they are not metal.

Does anyone know if “after market” metal gib strips are available or do I turn to a machine shop to have them made?

Finally, I assume brass would be a good choice to machine the gib strips out of but 12L14 or cast iron are also candidate metals. Your thoughts?

Thanks for your time!

there was a discussion not long ago on this very subject.
cast iron makes great gibs, but there is credence to thermo-plastics doing the same duty
i would also entertain bronze if the lathe was small

Thanks for taking time to help. The local machine shop is lukewarm on trying to mill the gib strips. I am sure it would take some time to set up.

It might be worth either taking a couple pictures and putting them up here or otherwise measuring the gib you're after. Lots of folks won't know what size an Atlas/Clausing 10100 is in order to help or make recommendations. Any chance they are the same size as the Atlas 618 or Craftsman 6" compound gibs? If so, someone was offering aftermarket ones of those on the Atlas / Craftsman / AA forum here. You might have some luck asking the same question there.

Thanks, great suggestions. I found a machinist who is familiar with the 10100 gib strips and who has agreed to fabricate a couple for me out of brass. The part number is in the Atlas Clausing parts list is 345-076 for both the compound rest and the tool post slide. When I receive them I will post results and photos. I wonder if the 618 parts list would have the same part number? Since the 10100 always came with plastic gib strips I suspect they are of different dimensions than the older 618.

thanks again for your time and suggestions!

My measurements for new gib strips are as follows: length is 4 1/8 in, thickness is 0.1213 inch, width is .3238 in. Shape is parallelogram DD327BE2-58E9-440F-9831-C0669814A13A.jpeg3A963C02-EDB1-4B1B-9D8B-ECCCB9EC618F.jpeg

Is your machinist buddy open to making more gib strips for others like me? Puts his hand up. I'm in Canada. I'll pay shipping!
