Lathe for Suppressor and general use

Just a comment on the G0704 mill - I have one and they are nice little mills. They do have a weakness a thats make me NOT recommend it for what you want to do with one. The gear drive is noisy and fragile - it does not do well with interrupted cuts or hard materials like stainless. The drive gear is pretty easy to strip and Grizzly tends to have a long delivery time on replacements. You can convert to belt drive and eliminate the gear train for about $350, or you could look into the Precision Mathews PM-25MV, which is basically the same machine, but with a better motor and belt drive for about the same money (by the time you add the price of the G0704 and the belt drive kit). http://machinetoolonline.com/PM-MV-BenchMills.html Just my 2 cents worth.

The price is not bad, free shipping is plus. Would this work good on 416? Is it easy to convert to CNC?

Alterian,
looking at the Bolton, I am certain it would be my last choice. I would buy the G0602 first and live in the smaller envelope. The Bolton is missing the follow rest, stay rest, face plate, drill chuck, 4 jaw chuck.... I think the chuck mounting system is lousy, it is missing some threading ability, it is 300 pounds to light for a 12x36, no outboard spider and the pictures look like it would be impossible to add one. No QCTP, longitudinal feed only goes to .004 IPR which is too coarse for gun work. Doesn't look like it has reverse.

Never say never. Buy the G4003G and live happily ever after.
Don't get a 3 in 1.
The G0704 is a good choice for a small mill.

Or look seriously at a PM 1340GT... this machine is Taiwanese made... generally higher quality than Chinese.

You may have to wait a while... however quality is something I would wait for.

The PM1340GT is a nice machine with a 3 year warranty and about $2,500 more than the G4003G when equipped the same. (spider, rollers on the steady rest options) The G4003G is NOT lacking in the quality department. Mines coming up on 2 years old and it has worked flawlessly. The fit of the parts is excellent.

Hmmmm...

My Ford is better than your Chevy...
NO,
My Chevy is better than your Ford...
:winner: :man:    :allgood:

Seriously... was trying to broaden search.
I like to look at lots of things... just to know what is out there.
But then... I am not one that puts price at the top of my ladder either.
To each their own.

And to continue the my ford is better than your Chevy
My 8,000# 14x54 atw is better than your grizzly and cost less.

But being serious I've owned grizzly and harbor freight lathes and if I was in the market I'll buy a harbor freight over a grizzly any day maybe I got a bad apple on the grizzly. But all I know is the harbor freight was ten times better assembled painted etc I'm also talking about the exact same machine. I'm gonna try again to convince somebody to buy a good rigid lathe because then not only do you have bragging rights but you have a machine that you can do anything you want with. Buy this because if somebody doesn't I'm going to do it and I don't need this come with an a loris and the lathe is made in USA http://atlanta.craigslist.org/wat/hvo/4828792041.html

Enjoy your new lathe. I'm not driving that far to pick it up. Oh, and yes, your atw is better than my Grizzly but you won't find one near salt lake city.
Dave, struggling with green.

Yea your out pretty far. I would have bought it by now buy first of all I ain't got no money. And I also ain't got no space ever since I got the pacemaker lol it's the size of 4 of the china 13x40 . I had one of those too and it was alright but turned bad tapers like .006 over 8 in or so so I got rid of it.

:dunno: Are you saying that you have a Pacemaker and want to get rid of it or that you had a China lathe and replaced it with the Pacemaker???

I'd love to put a Pacemaker next to my Monarch, not that I need it, mind you, but it sure would be cool to have 2 of the best American lathes ever built.
