Kids, cars and justice!

My story of justice is a little bit different. My daughter just got her own car as a gift from her grandparents. It was a used 2014 Nissan Versa. We went and picked it up and wouldn't you know that thing has manual windows and totally manual door locks!! You can't even double turn the key to lock all the doors. I didn't know they still made cars that stripped down. Oh well, she's just happy to have a car that she didn't have to pay for
Sounds like my ‘71 Duster! Loved that car—the slant 6 225 is probably still running!

My daughter grew up (from a baby) trashing the back seat of my 2003 Nissan Maxima with every imaginable gooey, goopy, sticky, snotty substance she could possibly come in contact with. She is now 17, just got her license and guess what her first car is! :) I spent 3/4 of the day showing her and her friend how to wash, polish, wax and detail the outside and inside of the car. Nothing more rewarding than watching her pull out stuff from the far reaches of the back seat only to realize that is where that piece of cheese ended up and turn green when she realizes what it is! The dead mice in the trunk were by far the best find though. The carpet steamer did a good job on the upholstery and it is actually in quite good shape, not a single tear. They are still out their detailing, my back told me it was time for me to stop.

I put a few thousand dollars into the car to get it safe and reliable for her. New Michelin tires, I did the brakes myself with new rotors and pads, I had the leaking radiator replaced, a couple of bulbs, registration, insurance, several little this's and that's. The new windshield will be next week. I know the car well enough that I feel confident in it vs buying someone else's problem.

She is a great kid! She passed her drivers ed course on Thursday including the written and in car test so she can just go to the DMV and give them her certificate and get her license on Tuesday. She was driving us (her friend and I) around today and I was actually very impressed at how well she is driving and how careful she is being! It is both sad and exciting watching them grow up!
Be sure and stress the importance of not using the phone or texting while driving. That call or text can wait. I’m sure she is responsible but it doesn’t hurt to remind them.
Congratulations to her on getting her license and a car.
I had a 18 yr old girl rear ended me in 25 mph rush hour traffic. I saw her coming in the rear mirror, she was texting. It totaled her car and only bent the horns on the BEVO longhorn in my receiver hitch. She called her father and he came to the accident. He commented that he didn’t know what to do with her. This was the third car she had wrecked. I suggested he take the phone away from her. Fortunately she wasn’t hurt in any of them. She did get a black eye from the airbag but that was it.

She has promised me that she will turn off her cell phone before she gets into the car. We agreed that just putting it on mute is too tempting to take a glance at a red light. I just sent her off on her first solo drive, about 5 miles from our house to her mothers house. I am not sure who was more nervous her or me.

We spent about 3 hrs in the DMV this afternoon just to get her picture taken. Since she took drivers ed she didn't have to take any tests. The drivers ed instructor gave her the written and in car tests.

She is and isn't excited about driving. She is confident and cool headed which goes a very long way. Even with dad yelling at her that she just completely ran a red light (a few weeks ago) she didn't panic until after we got to where we were going. We also have a no friends in the car with her for the first 6 months rule. Fellow teenagers are WAY too distracting even when they are on their best behavior.

She is going to turn on her phone and call me to let me know she got there safely when she reaches her mothers.

P.S. I just received her call with a turn by turn playback of the entire trip. She was a little excited having just completed her first solo journey.
