I needed to cut a slit on the end of a pair of screws but I done have a slitting saw so I improvised.
I camped a hacksaw blade in a tool holder

Applying pressure with the saddle and drawing the cross slide back I started the slit

It wasnt fast but it gave a good even saw cut

That I could finish by hand in the vice with the hack saw.
No slipping and marring of the head.

That looks good. Another option is to put an end mill in the chuck and hold the screw in a tool holder with the length parallel to the ways. I’ve slotted a number of screws that way when I didn’t have a mill. If the compound is set parallel to the ways you can lock the carriage, control the depth with the compound and move the screw across the end mill with the cross side.

A slitting saw arbor is a good project if you have a mill. I don’t need it often but when I do it’s usually the only way I have to make the cut. Amazon has adequate inexpensive slitting saw blades.

I've done the end mill in the chuck method before but I didnt have a small enough one for this job.
I built a vertical slide so I could do some milling
