I had the need to drill more than 100 1/2" holes in 1/2" steel which resulted in a lot of sharp curly swarf. I have a dozen neodymium coin magnets that I stuck together and placed in a 10" length of 3/4" CPVC pipe that has a PVC end cap glued in. I added a 5/8" dia. x 10" steel barto pull the magnets out of the pipe. Finally, I cut a hole in a cap from my Gillette Edge shaving gel for a tight fit on the CPVC pipe.

To use, I gather up a load of swarf and to dump the load, I pull the bar with magnet stack up past the cap. The cap prevents and swarf from following the magnet any further and it falls into the trash bin.

I have one similar made from copper pipe. I want to make one with a pistol grip so it can be used one handed.

I just bought a couple from Haas tooling. Was on sale for $18. Worked pretty well. I also have a Harbor freight pickup magnet. Bad thing about that one is the plastic over the magnet. If I try to pick up the blue hot chips from the lathe, it tends to melt into the plastic.

heres my magnetic broom for the floor. magnets from old hard drives on a mild steel bar.

one wheel with the magnetic bar connected slides out hold your hand on that end to stop the swarf so it drops into the bucket.
Pity it doesnt work on brass and ally.
 
Time to buy that 3D printer!
Have a Lulzbot Mini (original), but still looking for a 3D design package I like (please, no recommendations: I know what I want and can’t afford it [and no, I’ve tried the free ones and several trials; I’m stuck in my ways and stubborn]).
