Great Falls machinist injured in lathe accident

40 Years experience . . .

Be careful out there

I have a rear view mirror mounted to my lathe to give me a heads up.
I like the mirror in back of the machine. I’ve had one for many years at my bench for the same reason — to see someone coming from behind. — but I never thought about it for the machines. I’m alone too but I’m thinking more for the shop at work where not everybody might know proper protocol for announcing one’s presence. My buddy had a rule at his shop: if he was in the buffing shop and wouldn’t hear you over the machine noise you were supposed to flick the lights once really fast and he’d know someone had come in. Always freaked me out doing that but he maintained it worked for him.

From the news report he was working alone. He managed to get the lathe stopped and held it for 20 minutes before the motor quit. I'm thinking the belt was slipping Once it stopped he got unwound from the lathe and called for help. I have been watching the local news for updates.
Had to be a flat belt machine.
