Glass Platen for Jet 2x42 Belt Sander (and Mobile Stand)

I've probably said this too many times but I have little space. No dedicated space for lots of things so I put them away when not in use. Built a stand for the belt sander using a bench grinder stand & mobile base. For the past year it's been sitting on a little table (what the drill press is sitting on in the pics). Now I just need to figure out where it's parking space is going to be. :big grin:

Came with a hook for the power cord which was unexpected. Gave me an idea to maybe add more hooks for my extra belts. Not sure yet.

See, no room! :D Had to roll the bandsaw outside. You'd laugh if you saw how I got the 10ft square tubing home.

This plate was too large to cut in my bandsaw in the horizontal postion unless I made multiple smaller cuts. Didn't want to waste material like that so I cut with the angle grinder then made the final clean up cuts with the bandsaw.

Absolute widest my bandsaw can fit between the jaws. Fixed jaw moved to the outer mounting position.

Cookie cutters are great for marking radii that aren't critical. My radius gage set only goes up to 1/2". Not my idea but I thought it was a great idea.

Had to notch the mounting plate.

Needed to remove the disc side to access one of the mounting holes. Sure I could have just put the nuts on top instead of on the bottom but it looks much cleaner this way.20200830_201711.jpg20200830_203940.jpg20200830_203858.jpg

Thanks for looking! :)

Nice work Will!
Where did you buy those corners?
I’ve never seen them for sale without rails.

Thank you David!

The mobile base is from HF. I've been "collecting" them over the years. :D Ok not really but I was buying them during their 25% off sales & before HF stopped accepting coupons for Central Machinery branded products. Eariler this year they were put on clearance so that usually means they will stop selling them when they run out.

They cost $40 & w/ coupon I was paying $30. HF says to use wood for the frame but I use steel square tubing. I used one for my arbor press and has been working great.

Looks like they still have em on the website & still under Clearance but what's strange is the price is $5 higher now. What kind of clearance is that? :D Also says store only now so can't order it online. I know there is no HF in Canada but maybe Princess Auto might have something similar?

What a great looking stand, it looks well made, very solid. one thing about these type of projects is you'll appreciate it every time you use it, it's a project that keeps on giving.:)
BTW, your shop is smaller than I had imagined but man, is it ever clean.

Semi sort of ish fail. I used 1/8" aluminum plate for the bottom. The rear leg for the stand's base sat in the middle unsupported by the mobile base where as the front legs are supported by the mobile base frame. Didn't think it would be an issue & didn't know until the weight of the belt sander was on it. The aluminum plate flexed a bit causing a slight unexpected weeble wobble. Wasn't bad but I figured I might as well fix it now or it may never happen.

Made a support bracket out of 1/8" steel plate & a spacer. Riveted it to the mobile base frame. Now it's solid like the front legs.

It's good you noticed it right away , that base can not be more robust.
