Fly Cutter Eating Cutting Tools

Beat me to the rotation direction question. I inadvertently ran one in reverse once forgetting the hi/low range setting on the BP reverses rotation if you have in head in low but turn switch to high and vice versa. It was a head scratcher for a minute like wtf until I realized my mistake.

I don't see a clearance angle at the bottom of the cutter. That will make it difficult to cut in metal. Grind a 2..3 ° angle and it will cut nice.
I guess, looking at the stick out of the tool bit, the cutting radius is at least 2" so about 100 mm in diameter. The speed for steel would be 100 RPM.

What the other guys said plus. I would angle it down some. Only the tip needs to do the cutting.

All good points shared above. Where is the slot in the end of your tool? It should not be on center. The leading edge of the cutting tool ought to be on a radial line from the centre. Does that make sense?

Grind at least 8* clearance on the bottom of the tool. A bit more clearance angle on the end wouldn't hurt. Also keep the SFM down around 80.

Set the tool cutting diameter to slightly larger than the width of the workpiece. This ensures a smooth entry to the cut and greatly helps to relieve the impact on the tip.
