The pic is of a Porter-Cable Speed Reducer from around 1956, which is quite dirty and seemingly frozen. I haven't found anything about a patent so am wanting to find out how to take it apart. It appears to be turned from a single block of aluminum but if it is a typical planetary reducer, that can't be. If there is a seam I have not been able to find it. Has anyone here ever opened one up?

Maybe not a Porter-Cable, but I think Mr. Pete played around with one once.

The bedroom? Ok, whatcha using it for in the bedroom Dave? Oh wait, maybe I don't want to know.
LOL , I just pull a random box up once in a while to go thru and sort out . That little reducer had a planetary gear drive that I couldn't throw out . 30 years later , I'm still searching for a use for it . :big grin:

Are we talking about an older version of those plastic cased reducers that you would use to turn a drill into a screwdriver?

No . As shown in the pic , it was metal and had a planetary gear system inside . If I remember , it was a 3 gear set up , had an outer case that fit into an outer outer case . The damn thing has been in my bedroom for 2 years now and I can't find it . I'll take a trip down the dungeon in a minute . :)

I founded it , right next to the tube/can mic !

That’s what I was thinking of: orange plastic case that you held to engage the planetary mechanism.

Pic . So these fit in an outer case which is probably in one of the Vidmars . Had a ring gear in in it . I always found this piece interesting and took it to the beach each year when vacationing along with my Machinerys Handbook . ;) Needed it to take my eyes off of the beach candy . I did find something to put on the bay tomorrow also . The can/tube mics from CC&S .
