Dang Water Heater

I'm not a fan of PEX or plastic pipes of any kind. Copper will likely last longer than the house. Soldering is dead easy.
While I was living in London they had started using stainless steel tubing for domestic water systems due to the price of copper. That was a long time ago.
I had an old house with galvanized pipes so full of corrosion almost not water flow. Replaced it all with copper.

Bought any copper lately? If I re-plumbed the house with copper (if I could find a plumber who would/could do copper plumbing) I would have to sell the house to pay the bill.

I have been using CPVC plumbing for over fifty years. The first time was plumbing the Ray O Vac analytical lab for DI/RO water. Four homes after that. I have never had a problem with leaks or pipes breaking with it with one exception and that was female NPT fittings. After two failures, I replaced with the gasketed type fittings with no further problems. I have had two PVC pipes break, one when I twisted the pipe trying to break a galvanized pipe connection in an awkward location and the second where I dropped a chunk of steel on an exposed pipe. Both due to my carelessness.

Had I used copper, forty years ago, I would be worrying about the effects of the tin/lead soldered joints. Galvanized pipe is out of the question for the average DIY job as there are too many non standard lengths and the ability to thread pipe is virtually a must. I have used some PEX for temporary lines but I would be hesitant to put any fittings in inaccessible spots without having the proper crimping tool.

I used to work in a public building and I was the unpaid super of it. Was plumbed with 3/4 copper in the concrete floor - built n 1965. Had one water heater in the middle, 5 public bathrooms and a kitchen. The kitchen was about 70 feet from the water heater. No way to get anything more than lukewarm water to the kitchen sink to wash dishes. Constant complaints, no way to fix it. Had the equavilent of a radiator in the floor to cool the water.

when I was young all the car magazines showed the cars from California, they were awesome. My friend and I talked about moving there. We thought it was the place to be. I have enjoyed the weather out there anytime I was there. BUT... homes became pricey... outrageously pricey. And some things just ****** me off.... hint Things like Known to the state of California to cause cancer... (ON EVERY DAMN THING)..
Then there were the mud slide, and earth quakes, and THE TRAFFIC. YOU CAN'T GO ANYWHERE without being on the parking lot highways....

So while there were some great things out there, I'm glad I stayed on the east coast..
Most of California is pretty nice. Home prices are high but they seem to be high in Medford, Eugene and points north.
When we travel the west coast we like to see what homes are going for. High!!
Other than insane politics here it’s a beautiful place to live and we do enjoy the four seasons.
Summers are too darn hot.
Not much traffic when you get out of the urban centers.
Oh and my family is here so I’m stuck.

Home Depot is $4.45 a foot for 3/4” type L.
That would add up quick!
I assume plumbing supply places would be a bit cheaper?

I was born in CA but parents moved back to NE to be near relatives. I used to visit relatives in CA but they've mostly died (probably form CA politics;)) I spent time in the San Francisco area while in the Navy and enjoyed it. I was in & out of CA many times for business and vacations. Beautiful country. The last couple of times I was in the Bay area, it looked like the place was going down rapidly. So did Portland, OR & Seattle, WA.
I live in a smallish town (300,000) that is growing rapidly. Suburban sprawl is ruining lots of corn fields. The town center has been adding mostly condos, apartments & hotels. The university and a newish arena and old, revitalized entertainment area being the main drivers. Nice bike trails are a plus for me.

We were out in Sacremento, and had to drive back to drive back to San Fran to catch a flight. Someone told us to take the less traveled route. It was long, past wind mills, on rolling hills, then we hit traffic, in a rural area, nothing around. What the hey..

The fitting at the left came from plumbing clerk A, and did not seal. All of these are 3/4 CTS. When I went back yesterday clerk B at the same place said he could never get the plastic ones to seal so he sold me the copper threaded fitting in the middle and some sealer paste, which did not leak. And the guy looks just like Chuck Norris. The 3rd fitting came off the old heater and has a union type deal to change heaters and not cut pipe. IMG_0078.jpeg
