Finally went to a local store and bought a filter. Have to say, the counterfeiter's did a pretty good job. Exterior package is identical except for some very subtle color differences that you would write off as production printing variance. Canisters are identical everywhere except two places, the sealing area, and the joint between the top threaded part and the body. The local filter sealing area is, guess what, cylindrical. The joint on the local filter is tighter than on the counterfeit. Anyways, the new filter worked, but not without me getting sprayed! Parting shot, I'd guess. 
But it is holding, and not leaking.
Long term, I will plumb the fridge into the sink water filter. That way I only have one big filter to deal with, that is easier to change out.
