This will be a first for me. I want to change the jaws in my chuck.

My 3-jaw chuck has no mfg markings--I don't know who made it.

Someone (Joe?) did number the jaws and the chuck.

I've read that the jaws need to be removed and reinserted in the order specified by the mfg.

So, before I charge off and just take them out, y'all got any sage advice?

You'll be able to see the end of the scroll as you turn the key, and if you look at the scroll side of the jaws, you can see that the locations are offset just a bit to make them line up as the scroll is turned. Putting them in the slots in 1-2-3 order usually, but if you miss the end of the scroll, you'll have to back up until you snag it.

Are these factory new jaws?

This is a very old chuck and I'll be sure to clean/lube when I put it back together.

Thanks folks! I was worried I'd end up with a Rubric's Cube disassembled on my bench

I'm curious...can you actually buy new jaws for an older unidentified chuck?

Not too likely if it's not identified, although with persistence and the right measurements, it might be done.

Actually I should have said "exchange" - the chuck has outside jaws and I wanted to install inside jaws.

No doubt you'll all find this part humorous...

After wasting an hour trying different permutations of jaw order, I finally discovered that I had 2 #2 jaws and no $3 jaw

With a little more cleaning (and swallowing my pride to walk up to the house and get my magnifying glass) I discovered that I have a Union 5-3158 Chuck.

I'm guessing I'm hosed in my quest for the missing jaw :(
