I have an old gasoline engine that has babbit bearings, one of the main bearings is also used to control the end thrust of the crankshaft. The thrust surfaces have worn down. As buying a small amount of Babbitt is near to impossible to source I am considering using lead free solder to build them up. The lead free solder is a pretty tough material, although the melting point is slightly lower than babbit Anyone done this? Thoughts? TIA

Put a “wanted” ad on here. Bet you’ll find someone who will part with a small amount.

You could search thrift stores for pewter nik naks. Picture frames, candle stick bases, steins, etc.

Then blend in a bit of lead to make the type of babbit you need.

Also available from McMaster.

Much better off using the leaded solder. Lead has superior anti-friction properties. Melt out the current bearing, add enough 60-40 solder to equal the quantity you need, then repour the bearing.

Can’t paste a link from my phone, but the listing is:

Windmill babbitt no. 1 ingot w/molding clay
