Anyone else “nap”?

No regular naps at 78 y.o. although I will often doze off while using the computer and I usually fall asleep late night after having a brandy while watching the news. I get up to bed about midnight and will fall asleep watching some video on my phone, waking up 30 minutes to a hour later. My goal is to get a total of eight hours of sleep a day but it is usually six to seven. The pain from periphrial neuropathy is the biggest reason for my interrupted sleep.

I find it difficult to fall asleep when I am doing some deep thinking so have some mindless blather on the tube makes a good sedative. Even on some interesting programming, the commercials will do the job.

At 76, I just don't want to "waste time" with a nap. Sillly, because discretionary time is what I have a bunch of these days. But there is always so much going on that's interesting that naps are lower priority right now. Also, when I was much younger, I did some sleep studies on myself, and built a "dream machine" to induce lucid dreams. In the process, I found that no matter how soundly or not I thought I slept, adding the sleep intervals up it always came up within a minute or two of 7 hours and 4 minutes. That was surprising...I don't know if that is a general result or not, haven't seen anything like that reported.

My point is if I get my 7 hours and 4 minutes, I generally don't need a nap.

Used to fall asleep in my recliner in front of the TV a couple of times a week. Since losing 1/3 of my body weight and getting regular exercise (walking a hour plus most days) I only sleep in bed after the lights are off.

I can just about set a clock by feeling when it is 3 PM, time to nap. At best I only get to once a week, but if life allowed it , I would probably take a short one most every afternoon. I read somewhere we are supposed to feel sleepy around 3 PM and 9 PM, sure fits my pattern. I have been like this as long as I can remember. I'm 62, work full time and am in good health (for my age) ha ha. I think it is natural to nap, most of us just can't with work etc. until we retire or something. YMMV

I also retired early for medical reasons, and take naps now and then. The doctors say I have sleep apnea, and wanted me to get a cpap. Couldn't do it, so they switched to some sort of mouth guard to keep the back passage in my throat open. Doen't seem to change anything, so when the dog chewed it up, I didn't get a new one. Whole thing seemed like kind of a scam to me, but what do I know.

Anyhow, if I wake up in the night, the brain starts turning, and it takes a while to fall back asleep. But, as long as I get 6-7 hours in at night, I am happy. Some of the meds I take make me a little drowsy, but, hell, that is what the naps are for!

Dozing at the computer is napping. That's my cryptonite.

I’ve been very attentive to my health since having a close call in ‘97. I’m on no meds and I do my best to stay that way. I was doing pretty good with keeping my sleep regular(also 7.5hr sweetspot) until I got hammered by Covid in December. Mostly suffered from ongoing congestion which totally messed up my sleep. I can’t take sleep meds because they totally mess me up as do decongestants . So I was stuck with 4 or 5hrs a nite with naps in the afternoon. Then I found two doc done vids on YouTube that have changed my life.

One was about NAC, N-acetyl Cysteine and the other was two different types of magnesium. NAS is an amino acid, not a drug. It has totally got my lungs clear with absolutely no side effects. So that made me sleep better. There are several types of magnesium and the type for sleep is magnesium glycinate and magnesium malate is great for energy production. So NAC mag glycinate before bed and mag malate in the morning. No need for naps anymore and not wearing out the seat of my shorts from dragging butt all the time.

74, short scan (senior citizens afternoon nap) around 4pm about 3 times a week.
Cant get to sleep till around 2 am but sleep till 9:30 10:00 am.
Definitely a night owl and if I have to get up at sparrow fart I'm stuffed all day.
It is possible to live an active life with only 2 hours sleep in 24 if you take a 20 to 30 min nap every 4 hours, check out polyphasic sleep.

I used to have terrible dreams, which caused me to be utterly exhausted during the day. I HAD to take a nap every day, usually at 2pm. It really ****** me off because I have things to do. Then a doc prescribed trazodone. That changed my life. I can sleep through the night and not need a nap. Now, I'm not saying I don't mind a nap, but I usually can get through the day without one now. My dreams were considered vivid dreams, and a lot of times, they were violent. I believe they were PTSD-triggered, but not for what most of you are probably thinking.
