I learned a ton about calibrating the rods today. I got all of them within 0.0001", BUT I was holding the standard by hand. I'm sure I'm off a tenth or so.
I think tomorrow I'll recalibrate one more time and wear a glove to protect the standard from heat.
Each anvil has a set screw. When I mount each one I'm ensuring it's clean, seated snugly, I'm turning each one until the set screw is aligned to the same spot. This will be critical to repeatability.
I take 3 measurements without looking and when all three agree, I can be quite confident in my work.
