The big question of the day.....

6-12" micrometers

Should I buy the full 6 pcs set or go with exchangeable anvils?

I rarely need them but I want something better than calipers for up to 12".

Now that I have a bigger lathe I can use them. There is plenty if room for the exchange exchangeable anvils on the lathe so I'm deciding between them. Cost is a major factor right now.

I agree, 6 pc set, the multi anvil one is clumsy to handle, especially in tight spaces, having said that, at my shop downtown I had individual mikes over 12" and vernier calipers to 3 ft, when I sold out, I left with my personal mikes to 6" and the anvil mikes to 12", (and a whole lot more).

I should add that the 6 -12 set and it's companion, a 2 -6 set have been with me since the mid 1950s when a old friend whose father had a lineshaft machine shop in Napa Ca., he passed away, and we "liberated" them from the shop before the auction, they are WW-2 vintage Starrett in their original boxes

I am looking at a new Shars set. 0.0001" and carbide anvils. I have had good luck with Shars on specialty mics. I've got 30 year old Chinese mics that work fine. My 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 are old Chinese.

Not a bad price at $400 and change . I hate those interchangable anvil mics :cussing:We had some huge ones at my original place , somewhat cumbersome .

I haven't used the interchangeable anvil mics so I figured I'd get an ear full here either way. Lol

An interchangeable mic set is not all that bad. You just have to get used to it. You can find quality sets for cheap on E-bay quite often. I picked up my 6-12 NSK set for under a hundred bucks several years ago.

In the shop I have individual micrometers from 1" to 13". For on the road, I have a set of Blackhawk 1"-4" with interchangable anvils. The interchangable set takes up far less space than the individual mics. The ones with the interchangable anvils are a little more hassle to setup, but just as accurate as the individuals.

nevermind
