2021 POTD Thread Archive

Ng, I say. That definitely looks like multiple hits.
I hate to say it, but he isn't the most patient person, potholes don't exist, speed limits are just a suggestion, sidewalks are good as roads for him, and that being the lowest part of the suspension at night looks like a sparkler. Don't worry i rarely let him drive any of my car's, except the little niva, but he for some reason doesn't really like to drive it, its too slow.

ah badgers, my cockiness got the better of me. Doing all 7 holders the same op all at once (mill slot, drill hole, tap etc) and didn't tighten the vise enough for tapping on the mill. Part climbed out of the vise, tap snapped. It was my nicest 10-32 too :(

tried a few things to get it out with no success, then remembered that the bottom half of the hole was untapped. So I tapped it from the bottom :)

it'll be a bit more of a pain to adjust (check height, remove holder, adjust set screw, check height, repeat) but it saved a holder.

I'll make sure I tighten the vise better next time..

Today i spent the morning in skopje, and managed to find and buy a timing set for the white elephant 2. Many of the parts places have very old inventory, timing sets from 2015. So i had to go to the main importer for INA and got the same set that is on the vehicle already. Date of production is 2020 so i'm confident it should last. It was 40 degrees centigrade in the shade (very hot) The 607 is keeping up to temp no problems.

I don't have any real "shop space" (it currently stores the rototiller and should have the snow blower and lawnmower in it). I have an upcoming wood project (I need to build a table for my brother-in-law at the request of his teenage kids), so I need to prep a mobile stand that can be used with any of the planers/jointers/saws. I opted to not do my typical bend by slicing and welding the tubing so I can get flared legs (better stability), and went to the lathe to make an aluminum bending die I can use in the hydraulic press. Unfortunately, mid way through the turning, my countershaft bearings went out.

So, I bought new bearings, made jigs to get the old parts off that seemed to be unable to come off (I'm guessing the set screws were overkill), and then finished cutting my die. It's always a bit heart breaking when to take the newly turned part to the bandsaw to cut it in half.

The set up, I thought, was a bit sketchy :

The slice gave me two separate dies I can use here.

The dies only have to last for two bends per die (four total). They are ready for me to finish preparing the legs for the weld. What I wouldn't give for a nice welding table (and the real estate that would go with it).

Today i spent some quality time in the small garage with the white elephant No:2. Replacing the timing belt, being a high mileage vehicle everything fought me. Also this being a VW group car i'm not that familiar with it also seems that the manufacturer intencenetly made it to require special tools. But after few hours i managed to replace it also dealt with the very stuck water pump. Just as i was about to finish with the full service changed the oil, and oil filter, come to change the air filter and suprase intake is full of dirt. Took the air filter out it was one solid piece of dirt, traced it and the wheel liner is missing a piece and the wheel is sliding road dirt and water right in it. Seeing this i know is catastrophic but too late to cry about it now, fire up the pressure washer remove the maf sensor and wash out all the dirt installed new filter, new wheel liner for a golf, started the engine and adjusted the injection pump. Also had to change both CV joint on the passenger axle, repair the fan belt tensioner replace the belt as well as lots of other small items. This was a lot of work for one person in a single day, but having access from both top and bottom thanks to the inspection pit helped a lot. Not too many pictures in the second half of the job because my hands wore coverd in black diesel oil.
