I worked on my “chuck cart” which has a Sky Hook on it. I tried to reinforce the top shelf of this cart so that it could survive lifting a 130 lb chuck off the ground, but the top shelf of the cart is too flimsy. So this cart is merely able to *store* the toolpost mini-crane. I was also finally able to figure out a way to fit the 12” chuck on this narrow cart.

I also switched out the foot pedal box that came on the side of the “chuck cart” (which is a welding cart), and I stole a hook off my TIG cart (an identical cart). Now the foot pedal box is on the TIG cart & has gloves in it. The relocated hook allows the chuck cart to store the big chuck keys.

The foot pedal box that originally came on the welding cart also prevented the chucks in boxes from fitting on the bottom shelf, which was always friggin’ annoying.

I spent the rest of the afternoon making recycled pipe welding coupons: parting, facing off my cap beads, cutting new bevels & landings. I went through two $8 carbide parting inserts.

Here is a machined down failed overhead weld.

I keep my carts well out of the way when they are not in active use:

I don't really care for stick welding so I only keep one box of 6011 on hand (never opened). The only reason I could see myself stick welding would be something that was rusty and crusty. :)

...or when you get tired of driving down to the LWS and buying shielding gas LOL.

Personally, I like stick welding. Especially for something that’s not precision but is thicker steel. I like the penetration of stick welding, like the fact I don’t need to grind down everything to shiny steel, and like the fact that I don’t need to turn off shop fans or worry about welding outside in the wind. It has its place in my opinion.

Didn't make much in the shop today, but I did have quite a project of the day. I drove about 140 miles round trip to get these. A beautiful Bridgeport J head mill with apparently, very little use on it. And a Southbend Heavy 10 with a few minor issues. Both machines are well tooled. Just me and my 79yo father in law.
I am exhausted, and very pleased!

I didn't make it in the shop today but I finished it.
A single cylinder gas powered internal combustion engine model.
It has a 1" bore with a 1 1/4" stroke and has a wet sump.
Here it is.
