2015 POTD Thread Archive

I made a small fenced in area for our chicken and made a door for them to go from the barn to the fenced in the Area. I also got the bed of my south Bend Lath stripped and the first coat of paint on.
Heres video of the days activity.

Second part of my project to replace the PM1340GT lathe handles. This was the carriage and cross slide handles, the stock ones were too short and small, and kind of loose fitting. I also didn't like the nut at the end of the stock handles for adjusting the lateral clearance. Milled and knurled some new handles out of 6061, they are about 30% larger than stock. The knurl was impressed on the handles, then lightly turned down and lightly sanded/polished to give a smother finish. The new handles use a 3/8"-16 (same thread size as original handle) Allen cap screw shaft that was adjusted to a fixed length when mounted. The milled handles are bushed with bronze inserts at both ends, the tapered end bushing extend 0.015" past the aluminum to act as a bearing surface. The finished handles have about 0.020" lateral and 0.001" rotational clearance when mounted. I use a viscous grease on the shaft to give a slightly dampened feel on rotation. They work much nicer than stock. May seem like overkill, but helped me learn new skills on the lathe.

When you say milled the handles, you mean on a rotary table or interpolated on cnc? Or do you actually mean you turned new handles on the lathe?

Clip the wing feathers and ground them varmints. They kinda' invalidated the animated movie CHICKEN RUN though.

Napa is a good place for those parts not related to a Car or Truck. If I go into Advance Auto or Autozone they can't find anything without a part number or vehicle year, make & model.
that is correct no ole school counter men and not many use books today . Never mind how to look up hard parts. If computer don't list it they say ain't got it. besides none have a clue how to cross reference and or research cross fits . Btw ( I grew up in Auto business) customer would come in with a ole greasy broken Bering without a clue what it was in. piece together like a puzzle get the numbers off of it . Upon research and the back of book id find a match and a working part.
ohh as far as oil filters all ya gota do is match the thread make sure the base of seal is same diam and filter is same size or longer and you have a match . the other thing that differs is how much paper they put in filter . That EZ and ya wonder why they sell 1000 dif filters.. all about the money on parts. an oil filter is an oil filter

VERRY NICE handles MKSJ they look sharp.. clean and sleek... :encourage:

Turned them on the lathe. I use milling somewhat generically, using the lathe is new for me, so you are correct.
