44 miles from a hardware store, Rock Breaker??!! That's a deal breaker. I could never live that far from civilization.

I think the only thing I might add is two 'v' grooves for holding round stock. One vertical one horizontal. Only 'cause I needed them before.
I thought about that but have found them to be a PITA more often than I need them. I have one drill press vise with the grooves so I left them out on this one. Usually with good smooth jaws I have never had a problem holding round stock anyway.

I'm surprised you guys don't make a clip on set of soft quick removable aluminium jaws , using 1/2" thick aluminium bar and some longish self-tappers to hold the thinner aluminum arms on to it . ( Think of it like a pair of spectacles where the arms are bent round the vice jaws & body ) If the aluminium block is too hard you can then use red fibre block instead but you'll need to counter sink & rivet it onto the arms strip .
That is an excellent idea and I am going to make a set of " soft " jaw covers. The smooth steel jaws are needed for " heavier " work. The softer aluminum jaw covers will be used for the more delicate work

Before I had machine tools, other than files and a drill press, I would go to hardware stores to look parts I could modify for some other need.

Me: I need a fuel pump.
Clerk: What make and model car is it?
Me: It doesn't matter.
Clerk: I have to know what kind of car before I can find a pump.
Me: It isn't for a car. I'm miking a parts washer.
Clerk: blank stare.

Haha Franko, I do the same thing expect I come armed with, oooooh let's call it a 77 chevy blazer for today.

LOL Franko,
I did the same thing a couple of years ago. Walked into a parts store and asked a pimply faced teenage kid for an electric fuel pump. He asked what type of vehicle, I said just pick one. He looked at me like I had 3 heads and started stuttering, but, but, but you have to know what its for.
I said, I do, so just go back and get one. Again, the long blank look.
Come to find out unless he had a number to go with the part he didn't know where to look for an electric fuel pump.
LOL must have been a new kid.

I spent a couple hours today fixing up an 8 foot long bench in the back of the shop to hold all my grinding equipment . I have my tool and cutter grinder, the bench griNder , I repurposed into a lathe tool grinder and my belt sander. I am going to put a shelf above the bench grinder to hold the drill bit sharpener.

It makes for a nice area to grind tools.

With my luck (and general automotive ignorance), I'd probably pick a vehicle that had a mechanical fuel pump ;~)
... then the kid could have the satisfaction of telling me "there ain't no such part!"

Mark, no guards on the grinder? Do you feel they aren't needed? I can certainly see the advantage of being able to light the area.

(Not busting your chops, just interested.)
