Who knows about simple electronics?

Now, what to do about the latching switches.
Anyone that knows me well would know that I enjoy taking things apart.
Turns out you can take the following latching switch

And remove this little piece

It takes away the latching mechanism.
It's not terribly easy to do but its well within my wheelhouse, as shown.
The switch in the picture is already altered. You can see the metal where I recrimped the switch together.
It's not the prettiest switch but it works just fine and won't fall apart. If I needed to, I could add a little super glue to insure it were super secure.

I can’t figure out what you are trying to do with those two buttons...
Why would you want pulses to go to the DIR input?
Just pull the input HIGH with a 1KΩ - 10KΩ resistor, and have the button switch the input to ground. That way, when the button is closed, the input to DIR is LOW and when the button is open, it’s HIGH.

D'OH!!
You're right. I don't want pulses going to the dir.
That was a dumb mistake.

I need to wrap my head around this again.
