All hope isn't lost!
I have repaired more than one damaged door component like this.

Using the sled with a surfacing bit, rout the entire center "rail" 1/8"- 3/16" lower. Take extra care at the edges!
Plane down and glue in a similar thickness repair piece. The joints will be almost invisible even if the grain isn't a perfect match.
