New to me 1929 wide (heavy?) 9" long bed and overhead silent drive casting trade

Next up I bored out the threads on the tail stock quill. I tried being cute and leaving some threads and clocking the old and new together but that didn't work :)

Then used loctite bearing retainer to glue the two together, with one thou clearance or a bit lessIMG20230129121350.jpg

Last task was to cut a key way in the handle for the new key. The original was drilled in place for a pin and I didn't want to attempt that.

Amazingly, I actually had a 3/32 broach for the key (random auction item), so I had to make a bushing

And broached! First time ever for me :)IMG20230130222316.jpg

Travel
IMG20230130223753.jpg
I need to do some thinking and fettling as I'm losing around 1/4" of travel, but I'll get to that in a bit

Nice work! Thanks for the photos. Keep going.
All this reminds me I have several things to do on the lathe.
To the shop-cave Batman!

Thanks, much appreciated! These things are all going to make a big difference, enough so that the lack of them is what kept pushing me to make them :)

Did a little fettling on the tailstock and got 3/8" of travel back AND my drill chuck pops off a 1/4" before the quill stops. Super happy with it now. Even managed to keep the oiler in a sort of useful place, more by luck than judgement

Just read the whole thread through. Great job you’ve done on this. Thoroughly thought through and well executed. Looking forward to seeing more updates

Thanks Ben, couple more projects on the list - tailstock DRO and new countershaft polyV step pulley. The second one is going to take a while so I figured I'd do the easy one first!

Made a threaded jam plug for the oil dauber hole in the tailstock

Cut out the quill bracket from some 1/4 or 5/16" plate, only took 3 tries to get the hole the right size :) Used a coping saw for the curves then finished up using files

Annoyingly my 10-32 tap stripped out the threads on the quill bracket, so I went up to 12-24 and accidentally picked up a 12-32 tap (garh!) for which I have NO SCREWS. So I had to made a set screw from scratch by single pointing (NO DIE!!!) and then some filing/ hacksawing. Works though.

Drill chuck ejects just before the bracket hits the tailstock. Fully extended pic is just as the screw disengages.

Looking forward to using this, no more marking drill depth on the drill with a sharpie!
