need to make this happen ASAP (square die set up)

Thanks RJ, excellent idea. That is what I'll go with. I'll post some pics

Ok, here's what I've accomplished so far

I could only drum up a piece of steel about 3½" long and 2" diameter, So I faced it off and bored a 1.750 hole in it

then drilled a .312 hole thru the rest of it, for the bolt that will secure it to the holder

next flip it and drill a slightly undersized hole for the punch

then hone it for a light press fit

now push in the punch

thread in the bolt to hold the punch

remove the punch and set up the adapter to drill and tap for a set screw to hold in the punch
a 3rd way

On a side note, this is a cool tool. $5. Put it in the drill chuck, lower it down onto the tube,
move the Y axis handle until the witness marks align and your on center !!!

drill and tap the hole

grind a small flat for the set screw to push against

I think between the light press fit, the thru bolt, & the flat and set screw,
I think the punch will stay where it's put.

next drilled and tapped a hole for a set screw to hold the adapter to the ram
A little Dy-Chem to make a mark for a small hole in the ram, to keep the adapter from moving

divot in ram

couldn't find a 1/4-28 screw set, so I made one from a long allen screw

That ought to hold the punch securely.

Now can I get some ideas on the die plate? I bought a piece of 1" thick x 8" wide x 24"
long piece of aluminum plate from the scrap yard a couple of days ago for $10.
I think it would be easy to machine. So what's the most efficient way to machine the hole in the plate for the die?
Should I cut a piece off and chuck it up in a 4 jaw chuck on the lathe or cut a piece off and machine it in the mill?

Ok, here's what I've accomplished so far

got it pretty much whipped. Think I'll cut the ends off the aluminum and get some clamps to fix it to the press.
And I got to dig up a spring to strip it. Thanks for all the help y'all offered. Much appreciate

Mutt
