2009 mini cooper clubman, timing chain and valve seals

Bravely he marches into the jaws of death. Or under the hood
I was saying cluster-F to myself about 4 pages back- sheesh what an engine
I sympathize with your travails- I worked for a French engineer, they love complexity

Been following the torture you're going through. And I got to say this is why I love old GM trucks; I feel they hadn't gone with "Design by committee" back then. Hope you get her licked.

Well, pulled the vanos solenoids and they looked good. At least the screens were clean.

Then, while reinstalling the intake vanos solenoid, I heard a “snap”.

The freaking pcv hose broke off! Well, “hose” is being a bit generous. Its a corrugated plastic pipe and when it was slightly bent, it broke off.

100 bucks to replace, can’t get to the manifold connection with removing the manifold itself.

Really getting tired of all the plastic garbage under the hood of this car…I’m about two heartbeats away from loading this thing on a flatbed and sending it to the dealer…

Yeah, I don’t have a lot of good to say about gm trucks either….have had lots, always something needing attention on them. Never had a new one, perhaps they’re better under warranty….

As for modern engines with cylinder delete, you have to watch out as they have some severe issues.

Oh my. Repaired the pcv “pipe”, at least for now.

Shot it with cleaner (to remove oil residue) cut a piece of pcv rubber hose that just slipped inside the plastic pipe, then used rtv on either end of the hose outer surface to bond and fill it to the plastic pipe. I had to used silicone to seal it becuase the plastic pipe is the same type of construction as a piece of split loom, its just not split. So I needed to fill the ribbing or I’d get an intake leak fault. Finished it by wrapping it end to end in about 3 layers of vinyl tape. The tape is basically just to hold it in place while the rtv cures.
But here’s the biggest pita: theres absolutely no way to get the intake end of the pipe off without removing the entire intake manifold! Big enough of a pita on a regular fwd car, but the mini is 10 times worse! I had to do eveeything from hanging across the top of the engine to coming up from underneath with as much as two separate universal sockets.

I was able to get the fuel rail off and the injectors out of the head though. It wasn’t easy, but doable. Was worried the entire time pulling on things as the fuel rail and injectors are the same type of brittle plastic as everything else under the hood.

But I got it apart without anything breaking. That allowed me to swap #1 and #2 injectors to see if the p0301 code (misfire) to p0302.

Fixing the pcv pipe should buy me enough time to order in a new one to replace it. There goes another 100 bucks. Nothing on this little effer is inexpensive. Its all cheap, but not inexpensive…

After this, I don’t know where to go. I’ll just have to sit on it until I figure it out or break down and flatbed it to the dealership….

I know but many V8 pickups since 201? have cylinder deletes and just making sure people don’t think it is smooth sailing.
