What Did You Buy Today?

I went to a swap meet today. I picked this Gem indicator set up for $10. Then at another stall I found 8 assorted tips for $5.

The indicator was not moving so o figured I would take a punt at seeing if I could get it fixed. All of the foam had disintegrated and was in everything.

So I took all the accessories and stuck them in my ultrasonic cleaner. Gave them 4 cycles at 3 minutes per. While that was going I soaked the end of the indicator in some isopropyl alcohol. Making sure only to have the end in. I cleaned and dried everything and I now have a nice smooth indicator. I put the smallest amount of 3&1 oil on the end pivot section. There looks to be some slight staining or flash rust. I will take the end apart and give it a good cleaning later. I just did not want to spend hours on a full service it was junk. It will be a nice little project for an evening.

I also removed the determinate foam and glue. I will re-line it with something.

Follow up report on something I bought and posted here- the China U3 toolhead for 5c with pass-thru plus indexing for $90 on eBay for my Sheckel.

First, I had to double up gibs because the dovetail is too narrow... that held and was rigid enough, but what's appalling is the fit between the bore and spindle. It's sloppy. I measured it to 1.4952 and 1.5009. that's .0057 worth of wobble in under 2.5" of supported length not counting the .003 out-of-round in the bored part. So with an inch or two of stickout, it's like whoooa nelly. That ain't gonna cut it. Precision is gone, and grind finish is out the window, too. I could bore and sleeve it, or put exotic thin bearings in it, but I'm thinking more along the lines of fork this carp, junk is junk.

So now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

Can you make a new block? Or are all the spindle and accessories junk also?

felt, or as I recommend , anti tarnish felt (self stick). I used it on my Kennedy tool boxes. I am almost out and have to order more. I got mine on Amazon, but they no longer sell it. It is still available, @wachuko got some from the source that was selling it on Amazon direct. Great stuff, already self stick , and anti tarnish (prevents oxidation).

Thanks that will be perfect. I can order enough to redo one of my toolboxes also.

Went to get 9 sheets of tempered hardboard from a freecycle ad and on the way home saw a bunch of kid stuff. So stopped.

And picked this up, the other stuff was just too small for my little granddaughter, and I thought that the plastic might be too brittle when seeing how sun faded it was. But I got this...
And thought I can remove the screen and stick a piece of lexan in there and get a mag base and have a nice chip shield. These are really stiff, so perfect for a vibrating machine.
