Well, I followed everyone's advice and finally received everything I needed. Greenfield 4-40 tap, tap guide, tap wrench that guide would fit into, and I drilled the hole one size bigger. The hole threaded like butter. Having the knowledge and the right tools obviously makes a huge difference. Thanks to everyone who commented.
