I have 2 of these, they belonged to my grandfather and are likely 60 or 70 years old, they have a little brass ruler in one end of them which can be slid out to make measurements of 6" or less. They are not particularly fast but at 12 foot they stand out better than most tape measures, ignoring the existence of laser measures...

My father used one of those rulers all the time. Always in his hip pocket. We had a C Farmall tractor with no gas gauge. He would stick the ruler in to check the fuel level. When he died, I got the tractor. I was cleaning out the tank and there was a 6 inch section of one of those rulers.

My dad had several of the folding rulers. He spent many years as a steam fitter. With the folding style of that era, you didn't have to touch the hot pipe, just hold the ruler up close to it.
