I have one of these precision metrology instruments. It was my Dad's. He was a carpenter by trade and undoubtedly used it often. I haven't unfolded it in many years. The better quality folding rules had a brass depth gauge the could be extended.

I have have a sawyers' rule somewhere that belonged to my Dad, was going to post a picture of it but cannot find it!
