Looks like it is more designed to be a stabiliser than anything else, though with so little tension on the "tracks" other than weight of the thing lus the rider, how effective would/could it actually be?

If it kept it from sinking into the mud, and provided some traction, if only then, it would work great. I'd be tempted to emulate it if I still had need of a riding mower.
